Lunar Eclipse behind Eyelids

Color of Universe's Beginning

Infinite darkness behind eyelids same color as universe's birth. Sink deep into abyss

Philosophy

Close your eyes. What do you see? Infinite darkness.

This darkness behind your eyelids is not mere absence of light. It is the same color as the universe's beginning, the same void from which all stars were born.

NEDO masters gaze into this darkness—not with eyes, but with consciousness. They call it "gazing at the abyss" or "observing the void."

At first, you see phosphenes—random flashes, floating shapes, residual light patterns. But if you gaze deeper, past these surface phenomena, you reach true darkness.

This is the darkness before creation. The darkness from which dreams emerge. The darkness that cradles consciousness as it dissolves into sleep.

Do not fear this darkness. Sink into it. Let it surround you, penetrate you, become you. In this total darkness, there is no self, no other, no distinction between wakefulness and sleep.

There is only the void. And in that void, sleep awaits.

Scientific Evidence

Visual Cortex Deactivation and Hypnagogia

 • Phosphenes and Eigengrau: With eyes closed, you see phosphenes (random light patterns caused by neural activity) and eigengrau (the "intrinsic gray"—the color perceived in total darkness). These are not external stimuli but internal neural phenomena
 • Hypnagogic Imagery: As you transition to sleep, the visual cortex produces increasingly complex imagery despite no external input. This is the hypnagogic state—a liminal zone between waking and sleeping where consciousness begins dissolving
 • Sensory Deprivation and Consciousness: Focusing on darkness creates a form of sensory deprivation, reducing external stimulation. This encourages the brain to shift from external monitoring to internal processing, facilitating sleep onset
 • Meditation Parallels: "Darkness meditation" practices in various traditions (Tibetan dark retreat, sensory deprivation meditation) show that prolonged focus on darkness can induce altered states of consciousness and deep relaxation

Practice

Lunar Eclipse behind Eyelids Practice Steps

 1. Room Darkness: Ensure room is as dark as possible. Remove any light sources
 2. Lie Down: Get into comfortable sleep position. Close eyes gently—don't squeeze
 3. Wait for Phosphenes: At first, you'll see dancing lights, colors, shapes. Observe them without attachment
 4. Focus on Darkness: Look past the phosphenes. Seek the deeper darkness behind them. Imagine gazing into infinite space
 5. Expand Awareness: Feel the darkness not just in front of eyes but surrounding your entire body. You float in darkness
 6. Become Darkness: Let go of the observer. You're not "looking at" darkness—you ARE the darkness
 7. Release Control: When consciousness begins to dissolve, don't resist. Allow yourself to sink deeper into the abyss
 8. Trust the Void: Sleep emerges from this darkness naturally. No effort required
